Chroma NACS Test Platform: Empowering EVSE Manufacturers to Scale Up Production

29 Apr 2024

Back in 2022, Tesla made its Tesla Proprietary Connector (TPC) charging specifications public. At the end of 2023, SAE International released its Technical Information Report on the North American Charging Standard (NACS), standardizing the TPC charging interface. This is a game-changing development presenting significant business opportunities for automotive manufacturers, charging equipment providers, and charging network operators.

Chroma's charging station test solution is based on the Chroma 8000 Automated Test System. By integrating various communication simulators, this solution supports a comprehensive range of regulations and charging standards, including China's GB, Japan's CHAdeMO, and Europe/North America's CCS. The system fully covers standard functionality tests and communication protocols for verification of the compatibility between vehicles and charging stations.

The Chroma 80713 PLC communication simulator comes built-in with the NACS protocol, enabling the system to perform all standard test items for charging interoperability. Paired with Chroma's bidirectional DC power supplies (17040 / 17040E / 62180D), it supports power-level charging functionality tests and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) discharge scenario tests. Test items can be customized to meet the needs of different EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) products, including multi-coupler test scenarios, various EV charging curve simulations, and smart power sharing.

The Chroma 8000 ATS includes PLC and CAN communication data acquisition and protection mechanisms (e.g., automatic power switching, over-temperature, and over-current protections), ensuring reliability and safety for high-power testing. The Chroma 80713 has dual-use functionality, allowing switching between EV simulation and EVSE simulation modes via software. By using the versatile Chroma 8000 PowerPro 5 software, customers can expand their testing capabilities as needs evolve, eliminating redundant investments. This proven solution has already been adopted by leading EVSE manufacturers across the globe.

The global EV industry continues to boom, driving growth opportunities along the entire supply chain. As a key player in the fields of EV and battery testing, Chroma possesses extensive experience in both R&D and mass production. Our comprehensive test solutions power technological breakthroughs across the EV industry, covering whole vehicles, components, and batteries, serving major automotive and battery manufacturers worldwide.
